I have thought of using two eheim 2217 for my 150 gallon Discus tank. Since i do not have much problem in changing water everyday, i need the filter media to be more biological than mechanical.
What is the best biological media to be used? I have seen the Eheim 2217 contains a number of blue colored coarse sponge pad and one white fine filter pad. Are they the best biological media. Or should i use Ceramic Rings and Bio-balls instead?
May someone help me with the arrangement of the media inside the filter?
My aim is to get maximum possible biological filtration from the 2217. Help me with advice in this regard.

any surface area will become a potential site for adhesion of biofilms and biobacter

good media therefore has much surface area per volume

what is provided will do the job, i do like the ceramic and sintered glass options

largest pore size first to smallest pore size last so that filter media is not so easily clogged by physical particles

You should put a type of ceramic (or similar) "noodle" in the bottom of you filter then place a coarse filter pad above that (eheim make very good filter media and I recommend buying them).

You then put something similar to eheim efhi substrat pro or seachem matrix above the coarse filter pad. The final media is a fine media wool.
