Ok now for a few months I have been thinking about a large canister filter for my 6x2x1.5 planted discus tank.. I have a 2228 at one end and a aquaone cf 1200 with a pond master 36w uv on the other end. but I still get those very small particles floating about, now after much reading I am tempted to get a 2250, (was considering an Aquaone cf 2400, but they seem to have there own issues, ie 62w power, bypassing etc) so is the 2250 over kill or would a 2217 be better to add to polish the water.. I ask because the 2250 are on special at the moment, any opinions?? :)

2250 all the way but the Ehiem quick-connect taps (which you will want) will add significantly to the total cost.

Thanks Greggy
I have been waiting for your review of the 2250, are the taps the 16/22mm doubles? I suppose I'll require two, Ouch these are costly! (ASA has them). Looking at another post (davo and the 2260) there is the ball taps DIY option..??

16/22 taps yes ....the 2250 kills a 2217 for performance BUT it does not come with media which will increase the price but the special offer at the moment is good value.

The 2217 comes with fiter media, a fraction of the cost and are ecomomic to run. They really are a great workhorse cannister and bulletproof. 2217 for me.

After adding up the costs of taps, and media its about $100 short of the 2080, might be better to go all out for the big beast??,

The Eheim 2250 Classic requires a 12/16mm double tap (output) and a very expensive 25/34mm double tap (intake). Note that the Eheim 2250 and 2260 both share the bigger 25/34mm intake tube compared to the 2217 Classic which uses the smaller 16/22mm intake tube. The Eheim 2250 Classic uses a 12/16mm output tube whilst the 2260 Classic uses the bigger 16/22mm output tube (due to its higher output).
I agree with Taksan that the Eheim 2250 Classic is vastly superior to the 2217 (itself a fantastic filter) and I will explain why in my review... it's been stting 3/4 written on my hard disk for a long time now, best I finish it for you soon!
An Eheim 2250 (or 2260) Classic filter combined with an Eheim surface skimmer (you'll need another 25/34mm single tap and a 12/16mm to 25/34mm tee) make for a very formidable FW filtration system that has few peers.

Well after much thought and reading I think I have talked myself into the 2080.. I know the 2250 is a great workhorse but IMO it is not good value for money without taps.. and I missed ASA's special anyway, the 2217 is great value but I would like a higher turnover that the 2080 can provide.
Thanks all for your help.

Well I still havent got my head around spending so much on one filter,(the 2080), and have gone back through many posts to find some actual data.
I have read Taksan's review so many times I nearly know it of by heart.. and looking at Illusn's "Eheim in series" post and the flow rates he got has me re-thinking what I need..
EHEIM 2080 has 12L + 1.5L of media (Eheim media kit, 8L substrat pro, 4L mech and pads) has a real flow rate of 1207 L/Hr (Taksan data)
EHEIM 2217 has 6L of media, 4L substrat Pro, 1L mech and course/fine foam pads with a flow of 649L/Hr..(from Illusns measurements)
So two 2217 in theory would go close to one 2080 biologically and even at 600L/hr each would match the flow of the 1207 L/Hr of the 2080,
Ok so there is an extra 10w of power (40w in total) for both the 2217 filters compared to 30w of the 2080.. so if I apply Taksan's divide by 3 rule, with EHEIM Specs on paper they are close..
Now the fact you can purchase 2x 2217 for a little more than half that of the 2080(with media) can you really tell me its worth spending the extra..and why you would. :?
I can only go by your experience and then I can make my choice, Lucky I have so much choice.. :)
