Hi
Is it safe to use a drinking plastic cup and keep it in the discus tank?
also
is it safe to use a foam sponge in your box filter?

I'm not quite sure why you would want to do that in the first place but I can't see much of a problem as long as the cup is approved for human use. Plastics do denigrate over time and release toxins but whether they will in your case I have no idea.
As far as foam filtration mediums are concerned it's probably better to stick to aquarium specialists, there are plenty of sponsors on this forum that could help you.

hi discusfantasy,
I saw one of a reputable LFS in Sydney sell foam sponge as filter media, so I would say it is ok to be used.

I wouldn't just take that as a given. The reason I suggested going to specialists is because if you speak to Clark Rubber there are certain types of foam that have killed tanks full of fish. Better to be safe than sorry and there are numerous different types of sponge.
