Has anyone removed their internal filter that comes with these tanks?
I'm thinking of getting rid of it as it takes up a fair bit of room and I have also heard they aren't really good anyway.
I currently have another cannister filter (unimax 500 with internal uv) also hooked up. Would that be sufficent by itself (400L tank) or if I do get rid of the internal should I get another cannister hooked up? The unimax has 2 x outlets and 2 x inlets.

Yes. I removed the filter from a Rio 180 before testing the tank. After taking it out and filling the tank with water I discovered it leaked, and as the box had been removed the warranty was voided. I was pretty careful so I don't think I actually caused the leak, but I had to reseal the tank completely anyway.
That said, I know a fair few people who have done it without any trouble using a long thin sharp bladed knife and a lot of patience and some swear words muttered under their breath.
When I got a Rio 300 I left the box in, but took out the filter media as I have 2 x externals. I have the outflow from one of the externals, a Jager heater and a sponge filter (in case I need it for a QT) running on an airline hidden in the box. I actually find them kind of useful now, though I hated them at first.

The filter is really stuck in tight.. However you can get them out..I used a sharpened hack saw blade to cut through the silicon. maybe took 15 minutes.
I hade more trouble removing the stupid juwel background I really really stuck in the tank.

Sure have. I bought a Juwel Vision 450 and hubby got the filter out in about 15 minutes using a sharp knife and a couple of pretty words

Thanks for the replies.
Do you think I'll have much luck trying to do this while the tank is fully stocked with plants/fish etc?
