Co2

I am setting up a new discus tank and have been learning as much as I can from this forum so I can try and get it right the first time.

I keep on seeing Co2 popping up all the time when it comes to plants.

Can someone please give me a run down on how co2 works or point me to where I might find an article about co2.

Also is it a must-have if you want to keep plants in an aquarium? :?
