I too have had this yucky stuff as described by you, tank. Mines kind of a white film thats also stuck on the suction caps and on rub rings in the canster filter.
Anyone know what it is and if its a bad thing to have?

Hi:
This normally happens in a newly setup tank...
During the first few weeks, the bacteria will start depositing on all available fittings, forming a thin-slimy-white coating which is visible to the naked eye...
This is sure to happen if you use any commercial "Bacteria Build-up" products...
This is normal and nothing to worry...
Keep cleaning this during Water Changes...Within about 4 weeks time, things should settle fine...
Bye,
