Stupid question though ;-) ..... when we say a 3 inch or 5 inch or 8 inch Discus, how is it measured .. physically ? I mean you cannot measure a fish like you measure a im-movable object or furniture ;-)
Moreover, this size.. is it from lips to fin end of the caudal fin measurement or starts from the head/eyes and ends before the fin ?

There are 2 methods of measuring.
SL ........ STANDARD LENGTH
This is measured from the tip of the nose, to the base of the Caudal Fin. This is also the set standard that most breeders and judges use.
TL ....... TOTAL LENGTH
This is measured from the tip of the nose to the end of the Caudal Fin. Normally used by your lfs to say that you are getting a bigger fish that you really have
Oh, and you can measure a fish by either sticking a piece of tape on your tank and waiting for the fish to swim by, or, remove the fish from the tank and lay on a wet towel, and phyically measure it.
