UV sterliser

Hi, I have a spare 11W UV steriliser and was thinking of connecting it to the outlet of my Aqua Nova NCF-1000 (max 1000 l/hr flow rate), which is being used as a second filter for my Aqua One AR-980 tank (approx 200 l capacity).

Given the flow rate and tank size, will the 11W UV steriliser have any effect, or should I not bother?

It will effect Algae but not protozoa.

i wouldn't bother at too low a dose a uv light can cause antibiotic resistant bacteria through DNA mutation

touching on this subject. would a 36W connect with eheim 2217 flowing rate 1000L/hour kills any protoza? or will only just kill algae? thanks.

a 2217 only flows at around 600-670L/h, a 36w works perfectly. (1000l/h is the flow rate of an empty canister with no media and 0 head height)

OK, thanks guys. Let me ask a slightly different question then - what flow rate should I aim for then if I were to use the 11W UV to also kill protozoa.

you want a flow rate of around 20L/W, hence a 36w is good for up to 720L/h

your 11 is only good for 220L/h (maybe a 2213)

while on topic, what type of UV/ volt amount would I need for a 75 gallon with a rena xp3 and eheim 2215 classic?

Hi dan, again it depends on the flow rate of the filter, a 2215 will do ok with an 18w, though a 24w would be much better, not sure as to the real world flow of your xp3, but work on 1w/20L/h of flow for paracites and 1w/50L/h of flow for bacteria.

I have an Eheim 2180, so would a 36w UV be useless?

not useless, i run a 36w on my 2080 (same as yours but without the heater), it flows at around 1200L/h so your still within the right range of 20-50W/L of flow per hour, its just not "ideal"

I'm hooking a 55w laguna 5000 to mine when i tear the tank down in july, just hope i can get the theing to fit.

I have a Pentair 25W UV to go on a 7ft tank.

Tank will have 2 x Eheim 2028's. Specs say Pump Output: 1050l/h and Filter circulation is 750l/h.

I also have a spare Eheim 2211. Specs say Pump Output: 300l/h and Filter circulation - sorry, I'm not sure - I'll have to check the box at home.

Originally was going to attach UV to the 2028, but I have limited space in the cupboard & think that the filter hose will have to bend down too sharply upon itself for me to attach the UV. The 2211, being shorter, might give me enough room not to kink the hose too much.

Is the 2211 ok to use for the UV? If it's ok for the purpose, what would the best filter media be? I've already ordered the standard eheim media -but could use that elsewhere. Is just packing it with filter pads better?

Theres no such thing as too many watts, it would work well on the 2028, and on the 2211, it just wont turn over the tank volume as often.

the water comming through will be sterilized, it would be more effective if you could turn it over more often, but i'me sure you'll still get disease control from your 2211, still i think it would be ok to hook it up to youe 2028, it only flows around 700L/H

The issue is the space (height) in the cupboard. The hose exits from the top of the filter & would have to bend down sharply on itself to attach to the UV. There is probably a solution, but I can't figure out what it would be. I'd prefer not to have a 3rd filter entering the tank if I can help it, as I didn't accommodate for that in the cutting of tank glass.

Well, the only thing I can think of (so far) is to have the UV sitting out where you can see it. Not really what I want, as it's a display tank :?

How long should I wait after my tank has cycled before using my Uv? and for how long should a Uv be on? Some say 24/7, others say a few hours a day?? :roll:

24/7 is best give it a good week or 2 AFTER your fully cycled.
