i noticed that below "author" the name of a discus appears (rather nice) and it changes with the number of posts..........what determines the name???????? and what are the rules?????

There arent any rules as such...

They are automatically generated according to your post count, or assigned by an Admin (example, Sponsor, etc)

1-9 posts = Wriggler
10-49 = Blue Diamond
50-99 = Turquoise
100-499 = Snakeskin
500+ = San Merah
