I have only used a no name from bunnings for my automatic water changer it does 1000LPH and it cost $14.00. It is quiet for my purposes as it does not run all the time.

I use the Sun Sun Submersible Pump HQB-3900.

http://www.aquaticlifeaquariums.com.au/default.html?target=dept_434.html&lang=en-gb

It's cheap and does a great job. Might be a little to powerful though and suits tanks around 4x2x2 or larger.

Hope it helps... Oscar

I find the Sun Sun pump isn't to noisy.
The whole setup is noisy though.
I have a 4x2x2 tank with a sump and the water going into the overflow section and water going into the sump itself can be quite noisy so be aware of that.

I'm running a jebo pump in my sump. I can't hear it above the noise of the water going through the trickle. I've got a heto brand in a small trickle / sump setup for my guppy tank thats been running for 18 months - it only cost me $12.

I've used other cheap brand pumps before, the biggest thing with the cheap pumps I've found is they can get real noisy if there is too much back pressure. Keep your 90 degree elbows to a minimum and don't try & save too much by going for small diameter hose/pipe and it should be OK.

My Jebo is rated at 1800 or 2000 lph depending on whether you read the sticker or manual  , I measured by timing how long to fill a 1litre container. After a 1m head loss I get around 650 lph. This is about what I expected as the pump is only rated for a 2.5m head anyway.

Do you mean use a bigger hose/pipe to reduce pressure ??

Exactly,

I tried using 12mm (1/2 inch) pvc pipe and had about 8 elbows with my Jebo and I could hear the pump vibrating & rattling in the next room.

Once I upgraded to 16mm hose and used only 3 19mm elbows (tight to get on), the difference was amazing. Now I actually can't hear it over everything else.

Im running a small 1000lph hour pump to do waterchanges - it sits in my sump and pushes through 15m of 12mm poly pipe that runs under the house. as you can imagine its pretty restrictive - when I turn that pump on it sounds like a 1/10th scale jackhammer

I suspect the better quality pumps are more able to handle restrictions / backpressure without rattling. I haven't tried one though

Very happy to see you are satisfied with your purchase. 600 40mm bio balls would cost you $90.00
