Hi

I have bought a 120 litre bin from bunnings to age and heat water for WCs... I have washed it several times but there is still a plasticy odour inside.. Do you think it will be safe to use this... I remember reading somewhere that plastic that has a strong odour can be poisonous to fish...

Thanks

Robert

I'd only ever use food grade plastic for my fish mate.

I just did a bit of research.. The bin is marked with the recycle triangle with a 2 in the middle which means it is HDPE - which is usually considered food safe... So fingers crossed..

You shouldn't have a problem then, if your till worried give it a good wash and sun dry it, the UV light will break down most toxins.

Certain plastics are made of fenolic resins and they are toxic but the smell is very stong when the plastic has not been cured of enuff.
In the case of small boxes i just put them in the dish washer as heat cures this.
I would just boil the kettle and pore this in and leave the bin till the water cools and the smell will lessen.
Hope this helps
