External Filtration Media

I was wondering what everybody uses for filtration media in an external canister filter. i.e. whats in the three or more compartments. Or better yet what should I use pH 7.4 with three compartments?

I use the shop supplied material in my canisters.

1 Otto filter - Uses a pile of ceramic tubes as biological filter, next layer is Filled with peat and a layer of filter wool, next layer is a fine sponge that stops any bad stuff going back into the tank.

2 Magnum Filter - Uses a pool type catridge to filter out large particles from water and also does whatever water polishing is.
