I have a 55 gallon tank and the lights that came with the hoods would they be fine or too bright??

what type of lights are they what is the wattage, do you want a planted tank or just a display tank with ornaments?

they'll be fine :) , mine swim under 400W of light with reflecters and still arnt shy :wink:

Does the diametre of the neon tube matters? beside wattage and range of spectrum.

not really, t5's last longer then t8/t12's, also they have a higher output.

Great! thx alot.
I'm gonna look for a T5 to replace my T8 in about 6 moths. I wonder if they make one 40w.

3 FOOT HO T5 IS 39W.

To use t5 tubes you'll need T5 ballasts, they wont fit in your 40w t8 lamp, you'll have to buy a new unit.
