Just got back from holidays and tank has gone crazy while ive been gone. It needed a huge prune, but all my swords have sprung huge, thick, vertical runners. Ive never had this type of runner before and would love it if someone could tell ne how to prune them properly. thanks

Dont prune the runers yet!
If you can plant them in the substrate for a week then you'll be able to cut off the stalk as close top the crown as possible and plant up the individal plants.
I'f you dont want them taking root in your tank, give them another 2 weeks and then cut the stalk, by then they will have good enough roots to be planted on their own.
