I havve 4 discus i a 4 foot tank. My water paramater are ok and i do at least 40% wk water change. I find when i look at my discus after the lights are off they are very dark. i only have a pair of bristle nose a i angel and they don't fight with them or anything. However after yurning the lights on for a couple of min they are back to there selves. Is this usual?

I have a short light on my tank so there is some shadow and when they go into the shadow they naturaly look dark.
that may answer your question

I tried to have a look at mine last night and see if mine were the same, but they retreat to the cover of plants at lights out.
I know a lot of tetres, cardinals in particular lose their bright colouring in the evening / early morning and colour up once they 'wake up'. I read somewhere that it a defence behaviour to help protect against after hours predators - don't know if it is the same ?
