how essential is temp for discus?

just wondering how important having a temp of 30 or so is for discus? reason i ask, is i am about to set up a 1600 litre tank (6ftx4ftx2.5ft) and was considering having discus in with some earth eaters. being inside the house, i can see that maintaining it at 30 degrees in winter is going to be quite a challenge, as well as being rather costly. so i guess i would like to know how they might fare at 26-27 degrees?

you can keep discus at 27, I've done it before in a few planted tanks, just watch out for ick if the fish get stressed.

Do they like it that cool? Like can they handle it? Because I wanted to put discus in with Uaru and eartheaters.

you can keep discus at 20oC the question is "how long"26 27 to cold.
you have to keep them at 30,for plants you can go down to 29 but i wouldnt go further down.
Uaru and eartheaters should be fine with the temperatures.

What about the Uaru's temperament :shock: Mine are crazy when breeding and around dinner time! I would've thought Uaru would maul them especially adult Uaru.

its abit of topic :D but all cichlids i know are very agressive when breeding :D and im keeping a lot of different species now :wink:

Don't go below 28 degrees.

Discus are warm water fish. They are more active and healthier at the higher temps.
