what sort of lighting do discus require and how long should it be on for at the moment i have no light directly over tank just a normal house light 3ft above the tank.

fish only discus tank? a single t8 the length or your tank should do. i like sylvania aqastar, but a power glo or lifeglo2 will also give you a nice CRI.

g day illusn.no plants in tank but will probally put some in further down the track.are these globes expensive?and what do you mean by cri.

CRI is color renerding indes, basicly how close the colors you see are to what the colors are supppose to be. any of those tubes should cost you between $18-$30 depending on how long your tank is. if your going to put plants in later get a double tube fixture and maybe run 1 aquastar or powerglow with a lifeglo2. when your plants go in you could replace the lifeglo2 with a growlux.
