How many hours a day do you keep a bare bottom tank lights on for?

On both my bare bottom tanks I keep the lights on for 12hrs with no algea problems. On my planted tank I only keep the lights on for 8hrs.

I only keep my lights on for 3 hours each day, from the time I come home from work till I go to bed, as I know that discus prefers dark.

Lots of light, lots of algae. I am putting my high light project on hold until I have a UV fillter.
