Hi cleo. A UV unit is considered almost an essential piece of equipment if you are a serious discus keeper, wanting to keep your fish healthy.
In it's simplest terms, it's a tube that houses an ultra violet light globe, which allows tank water to flow around the globe and so expose any bacteria or pathogens to the UV light, which kills them.
You need some kind of pump to push the water past the UV globe, and for this, we use a cannister filter and attach the UV to the outlet hose of the cannister, so that only clean water passes the globe.
The water that returns to the tank is now filtered, and contains no living free floating algae spores, bacteria or pathogens.
UV globes lose their effectiveness with age, and should be replaced around every six months.
