Reducing Eheim 2217 flow......ok ?

Is it ok and won't hurt an Eheim 2217 pump, to reduce the flow by turning the intake tap off a bit?

Might get a little noisy if you turn it down too low but it's never done my 2217's any harm

Reducing the flow is pointless .... a 2217 hardly has enough flow as it is.... about 500 l/ph when set up.

not second guessing you or anything Taksan, but i sware theres more than that comming out my 2217, there seems to be a fair bit of preassure to the water comming out of the spray bars, or is this just due to the small size of the spray bar holes and the 12mm hose the pump forces the water through?

could i be a pain and get the "real world" flow data of all the classic series off you, you seem to be the only person on the net who has it.

About 50% of pump capacity with the set up of (bottom to top in order)

Pay that got a pro 3 and it BY FAR the best filter I've ever used will be looking to get another couple in the not too distant future.

hope its ok to add onto this post....I have chosen my new 849lt tank and am in the process of choosing filteration, I've been pointed in the direction of 2 x eheim 2217 canisters.
Do you think this will be a good idea ? or should I look at another option also?
Any help would be great, as once its done its done, would like to get it right firt time.

I'd be using 2 x 2080 (or 2180's) or a a minimum 2 x 2078's

Eheim rates a 2217 as suitable for a 600 litre tank.

We rate Eheims ratings as rubbish and say whatever Eheim says divide it by 3.

yep 849 lt. was going for 6x2x2 but good deal on this one:its a 6x2x2.5 deep tank, i think this about 800/849 lt?

ok, i will check out the other options too. Just the guy in the lfs keeps discus, i thought i was getting good info.

yep he did say for 600lt but x 2 would be ample for discus.

Maybe i should look at sump in place of one of the filters, would this be better ??? problem being i know nothing about setting up sump. :oops:

a big (4x2x2 450L) baffled sump with a pro3 as a return pump (filled entirly with bio media) would probably do the job VERY nicely.

the old syle 2217 is rated for 600l tanks, so if i had 2 of these, i thought that would be plenty for a 800l?

Can you shed some light on the reasons it wouldnt be enough ? sorry if dumb question but just trying to make sense of all info.

The tank is on a cabinet so any sump needs to fit inside, the height is not a problem its quite a tall unit but i wouldnt fit a 4 x2x2 as suggested above.

How do you think a 2 or 2.5 ft x 1 would do as a sump ( I can put strong pumps in the sump) with a completely separate cannister running too?

The head height will be about , max 1.8m though..

any thoughts on the pump strength and substrate required to make this work? Or am i way off the mark?

Depends what rocks your boat I guess... sumps have there pro's and con's just like canisters.
