recently i have had 2 peppered cories die from some mystery illness.
the areas near the fins and abdomen are red which looks as if
its internal bleeding...
has anyone ever experienced this before with their cories?
the discus and other fish seem fine
could it be something with the water?
or could it be the food?
thanks

i've read somewhere that cories cant tolerate any salt.
is that true?
if thats the case then that would probably explain why mine died
i had to add a little bit of salt in the water to combat the white spots on my cardinals.

I have had salt for medication purposes in the tank before, the corys did ok.
I had bala sharks die of something similar what you are mentioning about 12 months ago, their fins would go red. I think at the time I tracked it down to some obscure illness ... in retrospect it was the fact that the biological filter in my tank was being trashed by me on a weekly basis by cleaning it directly in tap water.
I would do daily amonia and nitrite tests for atleast a week just to make sure your tank is cycling.

I found my cories were ill with a lower ph, i lost a male too similar symptoms your discribing when i had them in a tank with a ph of 6.0 they are now in a tank with a ph of 6.9 and all seems well,
Not sure if thats the answer but it seemed too be in my case..

The fish either died of internal injuries but more than likely the cause of death was septicaemia. Septicaemia is a bacterial infection. The most obvious external symptoms include:
-A reddening of the base of the fins and the vent
- loss of appetite
- darkening of coloration
- lesions, ulcers, sore on the body
Internal symptoms include:
- a buildup of fluids between the internal organs(including blood)
- haemorrhaging among internal organs
The disease can occur in fish that are kept in poorly maintained aquariums, from recent importation, rough handling and overcrowding. The disease can be devastating in poorly maintained tanks.
Affected fish can be treated by using a medicated, antibiotic food if they are still eating. Treatment can also be done by placing the fish into a hospital tank and treating with an antibiotic such as nifurpirinol or minocyline.
