It's been an amazing turnaround... 3 months ago i never owned tropical fish. Then i found out about discus, and through a few trials and tribulations with pH, hardness etc etc (and a s&*tload of research). i've got discus actually laying eggs in the community tank. Now the question lies, if i put a wall hung filter that's about to be delivered in the community tank, and let it run for a week or two, will that be suffice to accumulate the beneficial bacteria needed so that i can place it in the breeding tank? I'm going to let the pair lay eggs a few more times to ensure that they form a strong bond, so i've got a few weeks up my sleeve to research and prepare properly.

Who would've guessed that discus were so intriguing ;)

:D Congrates on your success.
I'd say 2weeks minimen. I here it take 6weeks for bacteria to fully establish.

squeeze or wash some old filter media in a continer... this liberates larger numbers of acteria from the media into the water

then run your new filter in this continer.. this allows those bacteria to colonise the filter media

bacterial colony established alost instanteously... no need to wait the weeks for growth of numbers from small natural seeding
