How much does it cost to run our Aquarium heaters?

HI guys

Does anyone have an approximate as to how much it costs to run auarium heaters. I now have 3 100W and 2 200 watt going. Hubby is having kittens at what the power bill will be.. that protest has been squashed as I am helping him make up that bill :)

But I am now wondering...?

Let me just say....its all bad!!!

3x100W=300W
2x200W=400W

300W+400W = 700W

So 700 Watts total when they are all on at the same time.

You'll have to check you Electricity statement to see how much your provider charges you per Kilowatt (1000 Watts) per Hour (KW/h). In the ACT, it is 17 cent per KWh

So using the figures above, the heaters would have to be on constantly for 1.43 hours to be charged 17 cents.

Off course, most heaters switch on and off with the temp so it does make it a bit hard to calculate actual cost over time.

But when attempting to calculate your totoal costs, don't forget to add in lighting, pumps etc.

Now 700 Watts for heating seam a bit excessive. How large is the tank and where about is it located? (In/Out doors etc)

But don't forget, it's for the love of the fish!

hey i have about 10 fish tank heaters going ranging from 150w to 300w and my bill is about $600 -$700 every 3 months ,that is all the tanks and the house so go of your last bill hehe .i try to hide mine from the love of my life you may have to do the same lol

I have two in an AR980 as the temp fluctuates too much down here in Tassie with the cold. These do not have to work as hard with one supporting the other at opposite ends of the tank. I have one in an Ar510 and one in an ar380. (and I want to get another two bigger tanks! :roll: )

But the upside is..they act as heat banks in the house and we are running the main heater less or it gets too hot. We really only have an electric radiant heater going on medium all the time.

Summer time..the tank heaters seem never to be on.

Hide the bill? (he pay bills and food) I pay mortgage and house insurance and assist with bills... :( I don't get a chance to hide anything!

Now how do I make that laughing myself sick smiley?

Tassie Aurora is putting power up this year again too :x .

O well..I better allow at least a $350 pet privalidge top up :shock:

I run 2 tanks and a water aging barrel and our bill hits close to $600 for 3 months :oops:

Worst thing is, it's only the wife and I here and both the hot water and heating is gas.

Yep..I better go see if Tandy has them.

Our winter bill is always around the $700 mark..so I guess I am looking at more than a grand. The last quarter with my tanks running actually worked out the same..But then it was hot, and the heaters were not really needed....They were spawning tubes without the night light! :)

:) Hey guys I am currently running 5 300watts. I place blankets over tanks after lights out. I find it really helps.

1x 250w metal halide 8hrs a day

plus 3 computers thats sit on 24/7
1200w
800w and a 600w

dad complains...
i blame most to pc technology...so he cant do much lols

eveyones house is different, insulation? gas heating? open tanks? various factors are to be considered...

my house is insulated... and with the tanks its got 1" thick foam around 3 sides of it dunno if it helps much or not but worth a try to insulate the tanks

It costs what it costs if we were really worried we would not keep fish ,a discus can cost more than we like to spend.There for the power bill shouldnt worry us ,if that doesnt finish this hide the bill from your wife.
