hi can sombody tell me how many breaths per min is about right
does any one think 108 per min is high

I think mine does about 180/min if you mean one breath is opening and closing of mouth. I am somewhat concerned that my fish are breathing too fast.

when there breathing right mine are usually around a breath per second or even slower, some times it looks like there hardly breathing. 180 per min is way to fast.
check ur nitrate levels and add an airstone or 2

That's what I was afraid of. My nitrate level is good. Always less than 10ppm and that's before the 75 to 80% water change. I just noticed that there is ammonia in my tap water, but I am using prime to condition the water. May be not enough O2?

My Discus 'breathe' at the rate of 60 to 90 per minute when relaxed, so 108 is probably ok but 180 seems high - perhaps too little O2 or some ammonia is present?

Less than 1 per second sounds right for adults. Although this will increase if they are actively chasing each other or when eating. Young fish do seem to breathe a bit faster as they are more active.
Do you have adequate aeration?
