does anyone know whether the female tefe should show the same scale pattern that the males show?

My female don't, but the tail do have a faint pattern (rounded)

strange that , i just assumed that if the tefe variant has the scale pattern that it would be on both sexes
maybe mike wise can clarify

Well from their siblings, both gender resembles their parents.

Hence I would incline to believe the female we got are the matching species for the male Tefe.

i have never had then and had just made the assumption that the scale pattern would be on both male and female

i dont doubt it , just seems strange ?

mike ahs comfirmed what you already knew, the female do not show the scale patterning and are almost identical to other species of aggie

when crossing tefe and normal female though, it was found that the offspring had only scale patterning on the front half of the body

also no half scale patterned fish were caught in the wild suggesting that hybridisation does not occur naturally

Comments: Hybridization experiments and the absence of intermediate forms in nature support the hypothesis, that the Tefe Apistogramma is a different species and not a variety of A. agassizii.

Wow...we get hongsloi over here but they usually come from Bay and the colours are not nealry as nice as that...you Sydney people should go grab some more of them...

Yay, I got fry from the hongsloi pair. Assuming it reaches free-swimming, I've got another 9 months to go before they reach sexual maturity (according to Cichlid Atlas 1).

They are the Indian Almond leaf. I got some from flaggy.

Yes, as Thomas said, they are catappa leaves. I have to start getting into the habit of hatching bbs, but so far, i have been too lazy and only use powdered fry food.

Well, after getting all jealous again of the Apistos you damn easten staters have available, it appears that one of the members of the local cichlid Society over here is in the middle of setting up a quarantine facility.
He should be able to import directly from overseas and Ill hopefully be able to get a nice range at a good price and be able to go and choose the fish myself...

i had been thinking about things along those lines if/when i returned to australia

it would seem that wa being closer to asia may have an easy in, though i guess to far from most of the local market

We are closer to Asia but the local market is much smaller here than over east so the demand just isnt there.

many probs with aqis and import regulations or have things gone ok on that side

As far as I can tell theres no real drama legally importing the fish...the eastern states get lots of really nice fish.
Some of the larger LFS in Perth import theyre own fish as they have quarantine facilities, its just that the population here and the lack of interest in apistos precludes the importation of small expensive fish.
I get along well with the owner of one of the bigger LFS here in Perth and he say that despite all the money in Western Australia at the moment, 99% of customers dont want to pay more than $5 - $10 for a fish. Its only the very small proportion of customers who will be spending any money. its just not worth his time or business to import apistos.

But surely the LFS should be able to import small quantity specific for a small group of people interested in them instead of shutting the door. A local store does this, importing 2 pairs of this and that in the past.

Getting them landing in Perth will at least save you the hassle and cost of getting them shipped across the continent.

Usually there is a minimum quantity that needs to be ordered ie 10, 20 etc.
Many stores dont want to be lumbered with fish they cant move.
Saying that though the LFS did contact me last week about importing some Apistos. The wife is OS at the moment so I had no spare cash (or tanks for that matter).

I would have thought having the missus away mean you can freely smuggle anything new into the tanks without being noticed :)

As for the $$ - you can always use the plastic and work out the funding later on........

Still the first. Momma still luvs them and lets them in the cave which has the second batch. I wonder if they are munching on the little wrigglers, but at this stage, I haven't moved them out yet.
