View Full Version : Apistogramma Registry

Gday fellow Apisto fanatics,
The hype/craze over Apistogramma sp. seems to be a rollercoaster ride. It can be in the flavour of the season and at other times a side-mention. This leads to an uneven supply of Apistogramma and some species are even lost to the hobby because their line are not continued by the person keeping them.
I propose that we start a registry of what Apisto someone is breeding and have fry that they are willing to share (sell, of course) with other fellow fanatics. With this list, it will make it easy for people to increase bloodlines and maintain a strain of apistos. I think this list is important for Apistogramma in Australia, since the source of wildcaught Apistogramma from Peru seems to be intermittent.
Having been out of the apistos due to renovations, I will soon have a rack dedicated to apistos. 24 tanks (1x18x18). Now to choose and not go overboard.
Cheers,
Vien.
Thoughts?

Vien.

Buddy - that's great effort of you.
It has been a real rollercoaster ride with the hobby. I've seen some really good F0 coming in over the years (back in late 90s), with limited success but extremely difficult to replenish good stock once I lost the breeder. In my current situation, I've lost all female of the sp. Rio Mamore and the breeding pucallpaensis female.
Here's my current profile:
apistogramma:
F1 baenschi
agassizi Tefe redback (bloodline unknown)
F1 macmasteri
elizabethae "red" (German bloodline)
hongsloi (German bloodline)
F1 apistogrammoides pucallpaensis
Hopefully when I can get organise and consolidate them a bit, I can start with more species.
Latest addition:
iniridae (German, still growing out)
borelli "Paraguay" (F0, not breeding yet)
In the past, have bred and raised the following (for the record):
bitaeniata (from F0 parents)
agassizi double red
iniridae (from F0 parents)
nijsseni
panduro (from F0 parents)
hongsloi
Cheers,
Thomas.

Might help if you get some correct I.D's on some of those fish Bubbles. Names like Marines and Shushupes aren't really that relevant anymore as they are just colour varients most of the time.
Probably best to be species specific if possible

Sorry Robdog, was not really concentrating too much on what we "USED TO" have & more on what we have at the moment. I think people are not going to be too concerned on what we had in the past as much as what we have now. My husband & I love Apisto's for their beauty & shape & because they are a challenge we never got right into the name specific's just love having them.

No drama at all Bubbles. Sorry if it sounded like I was having a go.
To be honest it wasn't the Marine and Shushushushu that rang alarms for me. The Flamingo's if I remember correctly were A. agassizi.

I'm glad you responded back Robdog, I thought you might have been having a go at me, I'm now happy you were not. I have gone back into my post & corrected my mistakes.

Hi Thomas
The trio were sold to be 2nd hand just as Agassizi. I think his colouring was just the standard type (with the orange tail & fins). I might have a picture at home & if so, I'll post it.
Unfortunately, I had him, his 2 wives & fry in a tank & last wednesday week & did a water change & then found him dead on Saturday. I had forgotten to turn the heater back on. Most of the fry are dead as well, but both females survived the cold.
If I have a pic at home, I'll post it tonight.
Cheers,
Bubbles

Hey TW,
Sorry to hear of your losses
We are only human - we all make mistakes.
Lucky you have the female & some fry & you did'nt loose them all.
Someone within the Forum will be able to help you out - ThOmas or Noddy65 will have Agassizi's but depends on what your Aggie Female's are, ThOmas & I have Aggie Tefe's but they are not compatible with your Aggie Females.
Cheers,
Bubbles aka Karen

Thanks Bubbles for the kind words. I've only seen one fry survivor. Mum's no longer guarding so I never know where to find him to feed him. If he sees me, he darts away. I'm not that confident he'll make it, though I did spot him today.
Found some pictures of the male, all bad. Include a few here so members can get the general idea of what type of aggie he is.
If anyone in Sydney has the right male & willing to sell, pls let me know.
Or if you're not prepared to sell, perhaps you'd prefer to have my females? I don't like to think of them all lonely in my tank.

Hope someone can help me out. Thanks in advance.

Hey TW,
Firstly - Nice looking tank  & your fish look nice & healthy & full off colour, looking at the aggie pics he looks like my double red in fact almost a twin, If I was to guess - I'd say he is a Agassizi Double Red. sad for your loss he was a beautiful fish & I think it would be worth holding on to your females & getting another double red, just my opinion.
ThOmas knows all the good LFS in Sydney, it would be worth sending him a PM. We have had some very good/healthy fish from Thomas & from his LFS :thumb
Good luck with your quest, I hope you find another male for your females.
Keep us all informed, have included a pic of our aggie below.

Thanks Bubble,
So I will have to start my search for a "double red".
Thanks for sharing the picture of your male. He is a nice looking fish. Where yours is red, mine is orange. Otherwise, very similar.

The fish you are after is not a common Apisto by any means. Unless they come in from abroad OR someone local manages to breed a pair they may have you will have to wait. I think it is fair to say that all we Apisto folk are waiting for something and we 'usually' have a short list.
take care
