I just got back from SA with these little cuties! They are called fat tailed dunarts. No ....they are not mice as they have a pouch like other marsupials.

These are native mice and breed like normal mice. They are called spinifex hopping mice and are basically like miniture kangaroo's! They hop and eat like roo's!

Love the dunnarts!
I had spinifex hopping mice in an aquarium in my room when I was a kid. Lots of activity at night with the lights off. And you're right Ben - I eventually had to give them up 'cos they kept breeding 'till there was no more room. Lovely little natives.
Very taken with the dunnarts - I haven't had them before! What do they eat? Insects?

The little dunarts are insectovores, whilst the hopping mice are big seed eaters.

They are great Ben. Love the Spinifex Hopping Mice.
I remember quite a few years ago there was a lfs in Mooribbin that sold the Spinifex Hopping Mice.
I believe you need a licence to keep them.
Are they available anywhere, as I haven't seen them since seeing them in that shop.
