Have you recently added any medications to your tank? Or have you perhaps added some new media to your filter?
A fish tank is a closed system, so things csan only get in there if you put them in somehow.
Is the substance more like powder or is it like a slime coating.

What's the breeding tile made of & how old is it?
I've got a similar powder in my quarantine tank where I put an unwashed teracotta pot in. Might be powder from that?
Or maybe partialised (small) food scraps?
Or the guys are right & they need to be drug tested. You can get a cheap kit from the chemist. Just tell them it's for your teenager. I'd be keeping an eye out for the dealer.

Note dat I've clean away 1 side of the tank floor in the pic.
Now I've move the pair to another tank w/o the tile. White powdery thing still follow. :?

It could be coming out of your tap water.
What part of the world are you in Anf.
Get a clean glass, and add some tap water, and let it settle for 24 hours, and see if you get some of the white powder in the bottom of the glass.

I sometimes get that in my fry tanks when I only run an air stone in the tank or under filter a bare bottom tank. It might be bacteria growing.
but thats just a guess

The only other thing could be your airstone try a wooden air block, if powder is back remove breeding slate and replace with white PVC tube.

Fascinating. Glad you got to the bottom of it Anf.
I've never seen it happen before, but it had to be something that was being added to the tank.
