My discus are pairing and laying eggs like crazy. Already two pairs have formed and layed eggs in a 150G planted tank.

I sperated a pair out into an 29G tank. Now I have babies. Believe it or not, I did not use R/O water. pH is as it comes out of the tap in Dallas around 7.8 or 8.0 and TDS is around 300 ppm. Not sure how this is possible given that everything that I read says you need pH of 6.5 and more importantly Carbonate Hardness at 40 to 60 ppm. Do I have a strain of Discus that have evolved to live and breed in aquarium conditions rather than insist on Amazonian conditions?

Has Darwin been stiring the water in my tank...?

Welcome to the forum sangpeiris. That's great news about your fry.

I guess after dozens, even hundreds of generations removed from the amazon, it's possible that fish will spawn in just about any conditions. However when they fail to spawn in harder water with a high pH it's necessary to bring the water back to more natural conditions.

It's worked for you, so that's great.

Good luck with raising the fry. :P

Not necessarily a strain but broken in tank bred discus. I wonder what the GH of this tank water is. It is possible to have soft water with high TDS. The calcium hardness is what is going to make the egg calcify and become impenetrable. Basically if you have water with high TDS and successful hatching it is most likely crappy soft water...or in Darwin's case strong males that produce and can penetrate calcified egg.

Not sure what all the chemistry is... I should really know, after all I have an EE. But my brand new caliberated Hanna meter read about 238 ppm, pH 7.2, 354 uS and 87.5 F.

sangpeiris, what it boils down to is you can have high TDS reading AND soft water...while keeping low pH and TDS is optimal it is not required as you have just found out. On the same note, if your 300ppm TDS was all calcium (16dGH) I dont think this question would exist.

*Admin Edit. Keep it nice folks*
