Just wanted to post these...

the tank was set up in october as a planted tank...

Fish have been doing great, altho something i though to be flukes... was nitrites problems...

it's the plants who have been harder to keep!!

tank is :

48x18x18
200Watts lighting
Eheim 2213
2 powerheads
heater
DIY CO2 injected inside the eheim

Fish: 4 discus, not sure of the origin... i actualy knew it... baught them directly from an importer who i used to work with... i might have some better pics if any of u guys want to have a go at guessing their origin (now dont say the amazon :D)
-12 blue tetra (snack... to replace my 8 emperors that they ate within a month... i just baught these )
-8 otocinclus, also baught today...
-3 ancistrus ranunculus
-2 nerita snail
-1 female apistogramma cacatoides (male disapeared... i suspect the discus)

lots of plants...

Thanks for all the help!

You've done a great job with the wilds Bruno. They look like wild browns, but the one with more red in the dorsal could be an alenquer red. So difficult to tell in photos.

Tank looks great, and the plants have grown well. What pH are you running at?

...and the winner of the Best Looking Fish Contest is.... Bruno!

They look beautiful mate. Where abouts are you located? (So I can come around and pinch your fish in the night)

Thank you very much for the kind words :)

Ph is 6.8, i want to get a RO unit set up, but i have no room where to put it... so for now its peat and CO2...

from the tap it is
degre kh = 3.36
degre gh = 6.72
ph = 7.6

after 24hours with peat:
degre kh = 5.6
degre gh = 2.8
ph = 7.0

The CO2 lowers it from 7 to 6.8, altho i havent tested the tank during the night yet to calculate the fluctuations...

The sand is pool filter sand, i add some fert sticks in it for the root feeders... i get a reasonnable growth... they just took off after 2 months! works good so far...

I am from Montreal, Canada, so i think they are safe from you

Thanks again!

I have a problem... that i have had for a long time actualy... but it's really started to worry me...

3 out of my 4 discus really are starting to get fat (new home made food, they are starting to like it). They look great and all... but all 3 of them are always pushing in a corner the other 4. I never did see any marks on the little fella... but they wont let him eat... he's starting to be very skinny now...

any suggestions?

tank is heavily planted as you can see...i doubt changing the scape will do anything... there is a strong hierarchy between them..

update...

See how they are all arround him... he's in the top corner

feeding at night maybe?

adding more plants in the front to give him more cover?

Thanks

actualy looking at my fish, i think i might have a pair in the group... its actualy the same 2 fish ramming the other 2 in the glass... one of the 2 they dont attack him as much since he's the biggest of the bunch.

That big fella doesnt want to share is corner with the other one tho..... :x

what do i do?

make a corner wich is more attractive to a pair to breed in calm? i got plenty of plants to do this...maybe i could isolate them using plants...

might look good if i use the wood appropriatly...!

would this work?

i dont have another tank for a pair..

The pair will soon take over a corner of the tank and settle down. If you like, you can put a branch of driftwood in a corner for them to spawn against.

As far as the skinny one, it might be a good idea to treat for internal worms. Most wild discus seem to have some kind of worms, especially if he is eating well and not putting on weight.

Ask your Local Fish Shop for something to treat round worms and thread worms, then a week or two later treat them for tapeworms. (You need two different kinds of medication)

I've got levimasole and metronidasole already... They have been treated for worms already...

He is'nt eating... or barely... they wont let him!

Thanks for the nice comments

hopefully they do settle down... not many options... might try to rearrange the setup.. again..

Well, here is a little update..

baught 2 more wild discus. They both died within 2 weeks. Then two weeks later lost the one i was talking about earlier...

now I have 2 really nice fish, and the third is looking like the last one that died... I am trying to get rid of him....

tank will be completly re-done next week... i have just finished a new stand

I will come and update soon!

better to keep a bigger batch Bruno, I've seen your tank before. Pity about the dead fish. I have seven very aggressive fish but it gets spread around, when I had four, one of them was starting to get stressed.

I've never heard of anyone that has had discus eat their apisto's but if they are pinching your emp tetras, I'd believe it!

Bruno

I am not sure about the apistos...

I have recently baught 3 more... and again... they disappeared... maybe they died or something but i couldnt find any corpse... maybe the corys took care of that... not sure...

for now I am planning on keeping the 2 discus alone... they are really nice together and they are the best of the bunch anyway... Never fight...

I want to go buy a 12 or so other cory sterbai... I would have 18... love those little guys!

OR more discus... not sure... they are getting kinda expensive. I guess we will find out soon enought!
