From my experience the years 2 to 4 seem to be the most productive, although they can start at 12 months. From year 5 breeding becomes more infrequent and spawns may be small or not fertilized at all. May depend on the species or how many times they have raised a spawn successfully.

I agree with Merrilyn about the 5 years, i have found lower production although they will continue to breed especially the males. I like to use a mature male to breed with younger females, atm i have a 5 year old male red diamond breeding with a 12 month old neice and they are producing many many fry. An advantage using an older male is better and quicker rearing abilities compared to useing 2 x 12 month old discus.
