I bought 8 royal whiptails over the xmas season. Here is a photo of one.

I thought I wanted a pair of these, but now I'm certain. (Quietly coveting in the background.)

Do the tails usually have a wave in them like that? I'm going to feel very silly if you tell me that's why they're called whiptails!

But yes, thats why they are called whiptails. Royals have a longer 'whip' and longer fins than other whiptail species.

Out of interest, what is the going rate for a whiptail?

I was tempted by one today but it seemed to be extremely expensive. Trying to work out if this is the fish or the LFS 8-)

Are they in community or species tank.

I've been tempted by whiptails for a while but suspect they might be a bit backward in coming forward for a feed, and i don't want them to starve.

Whiptails can often starve. They dont actively look for food they almost requre food directly in front of them to eat. Thats why they are hard to raise and probably why they are expensive. $48 is a good price depending on size. At about 8-9cm they retail for abou $90ish

mine seems to hide most of the time, but it also sits on top of my spray bar a fair but too, have put wafers in the tank twice since iv'e had it and it has come to the front too eat both times...

I reciently got a Royal i just love em!

I had 1 a few years back in a discus set up but had sell my setup at the time :cry:

i took out my Peppermint a couple of weeks ago because they were eating my swords, hopefully they will breed in the Quarantine tank.

Does anyone no how to sex these little suckers id love to try and breed them if i could get another M or F?

Did you have one pair to a tank, all the whiptails together, or are they in a community tank?

they are in a community tank with L104's and other smaller royal whips.

I have covered the intake of the cannister with a fine sponge so no fries get sucked up. I have heard raising is very difficult with these whips, much like all other whip species.
